Through non-human animals, humans have come to understand ways of living in this world and the animals have provided the resources for humans to claim it. But through the changing times humans have become separated from this origin. This separation makes it possible for humans to turn a blind eye to cruelty and the environmental impact that their claim to animals bring.
In the setting of a fredagsmys Living room, I’ve made furniture and objects in leather which are familiar and pleasant but at a closer look there is something is odd and maybe even off-putting with them. This is the definition of Uncanny, the English word for Freud’s concept Unheimliche which connects to both home and secret. Uncanny derives from Ken which means knowledge. Do humans today care that leather used to be the skin of a living non-human animal?
